We can all make positive and informed choices about how we spend our money. We can make a real difference to our local economy and community resources when support local businesses and shop locally.
If everyone (including in the surrounding villages of Kirk Ireton, Hopton, Carsington and Middleton) spent £5 a week (2 cups of coffee) in Wirksworth rather than at supermarkets or online, it would boost the local economy by £1.56 million per year. [6000 folk x £5 x 52].
Transition Wirksworth, like all Transition towns, supports the local community and economy by encouraging everyone to shop locally and to support local businesses, enterprises and projects that align with our aims and vision for a cleaner, sustainable future. By supporting local shops and local businesses we create a resilient self sufficient community, build friendships and become a diverse, healthy and happy place. The less travelling involved helps the environment, the local economy grows, and the local community strengthens.
SHOP LOCAL CAMPAIGN
Use it or Lose it!
Shopping locally means supporting all the small shops and cafes we have in our lovely little town, and supporting the weekly Tuesday market in the Market Square (8.30 till lunchtime), and the monthly farmers market in the memorial Gardens (First Saturday of every month, from 8.30 until lunchtime). Again this strengthens our local economy, and builds friendships and community.
This page is intended as a support network of local businesses and resources and will continue to grow. If you would like to be added, or make suggestions please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org

The Wirksworth Transition Community Land Trust
Following an initiative by the Wirksworth Transition Energy & Housing Group, a well-attended public meeting in July 2016 agreed that Wirksworth should set up a Community Land Trust which enables communities to build genuinely local rented housing for local residents. Legislation passed in 2008 brought in this new power.
The steering group is seeking building land in the area and would be keen to hear from anyone who is able to suggest a site. Local people who would be interested in becoming involved with the Trust, especially those who have skills to offer or are waiting for affordable housing, would be most welcome to join and can contact Peter Walton on 01629 825112.
Local Currency Project
As yet we do not have a Wirksworth Pound….. but we hope someone will begin this project before too long!
