Wirksworth’s Millennium woodland

Stoney Wood was planted in the area recovered from Stonecroft Quarry on land that was donated by Tarmac Ltd to Wirksworth Town Council. Much of the planting was done by local adults and children in a project inspired by the Foret Giorno woodland near Wirksworth’s twin town of Die in France. A Community Orchard has been planted in a corner accessible from Greenhill, which puts on an Apple Day in the autumn. The wood is a regular location for events in the town.

The Stoney Wood Group, all volunteers, look after the wood and welcome newcomers. For more information, look at their Facebook page: Stoney Wood
