TRANSITION WIRKSWORTH NEWSLETTER ~ JANUARY 2016
Happy New Year everybody! This is the Second Grassroots Wirksworth E-Newsletter, keeping you in touch with what the Transition groups are doing in Wirksworth.
For once Climate Change has been a major news item for some weeks… Appallingly damaging though the floods have been in so many parts of the UK, as well as elsewhere in the world, its been very heartening to hear the examples of people helping each other out effectively and with great kindness and generosity – Transition in Action!
Also the example of Pickering, one Yorkshire town that didn’t flood, because they developed their own flood management strategy. This involved slowing down the water flow with heather dams and planting more trees on the uplands, amongst other things……
DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES
Wednesday 10th of February – Transition Wirksworth Annual Meeting at 7.30pm in Waltham House Restaurant, where we hope it will be much warmer than last year! Drinks and nibbles will be provided! After feedback from different transition groups and news of events we will be putting on next year, there will be a talk and open discussion on the International Climate Talks in Paris, ‘Paris and After’, led by Rosemary, who went to Paris in December.

Workdays at the Community Garden:1st Sunday of the month, from 11 a.m (and other Sundays and/or Thursdays as well.) Contact Rosemary on 07904 783818 to check when the next workday is or what needs doing if you want to go up there on your own. All are welcome!
Workday This Sunday 10th and Sunday 24th January 11am -3pm. The soil will likely be too wet to get on but there are various other tasks that could be done
Next Planning Meeting: Tuesday January 12th 2016 7-9 p.m. at Vally’s, 68 the dale, third past the play park.
Next Garden Trip: Tuesday 16th February 2016, is to Felley Priory in Nottinghamshire to see the carpets of snowdrops, and is open to all Growers and Friends of Growers (Phone Rosemary for shared car arrangements)

STONEY WOOD
Sunday January 17th at 6pm – Wassailing at the Community Orchard. (Old Twelfth Night) This is a very old custom where we wake our fruit trees up in the Community Orchard by making lots of noise! Also involves drinking cider and a short ceremony! The Community Orchard is half way up Stoney Wood, or accessible from the Footpath that leaves Greenhill on the right about half way up (by its steepest bit).
Bring something to make a loud noise with!
Saturday 30th January – Community Orchard Pruning and maintenance day. Bring lunch. Tools and hot drinks provided.
Wednesday 3rd Feb Stoney Wood AGM at the Town Hall with a showing of Phil Richards amazing photos of the history of Stoney Wood!
